Chapter 23 - Nathan
I paced the front room, running my fingers through my hair; nobody had seen or heard from Jay since he left last night.
The door opened and I spun around expectantly, but it was only Max. He smiled weakly “look he’s probably just skulked off to his brothers or somewhere, he’ll be back soon”.
“He wasn’t there”.
“He probably covered for him, look, just go to bed; you look like death warmed up”.
“I’m not tired” I mumbled childishly, sitting down on the sofa.
“Come on Nath, I don’t know what’s happened between you two but he’ll be ba-”
Almost as Max said it Jay walked in through the door, looking terrible.
I stood up and stormed across to him, “Where have you been” I screamed, unreserved, “I have been up all night searching for you. Do you know how worried I have been”.
“I’m sorry Nath” he mumbled, trying to walk up the stairs to the bedroom.
Where do you think you’re going” I yelled.
“To bed”.
“No you’re not; you’re going to tell me what was going through your fucking head”.
“Nath, chill, he’s back, just take it easy”. Max said.
“Look, I’m tired and my head is killing me, literally, so just let me go to bed”.
“Have you been drinking”, I snapped, smelling it on his breath.
“So what if I have”.
“Jay, you are not allowed to drink, it’ll fuck up your medication and-”
“Well you know what Nath, I don’t give a fuck, I could be dead by tomorrow I might as well fucking enjoy myself”. He shouted, before storming off into the bedroom.
I sighed and turned to Max, I could feel my bottom lip quivering and I tried to fight back the tears, but it was no use. I collapsed into Max’s arms sobbing, drawing in deep gasping breaths to try and stop myself.
“Max I don’t want him to die, I don’t. I didn’t mean to shout at him, but, but, I was so scared, what if something had happened to him, what if he’d collapsed and nobody could do anything, what if-“
“Shh, shh stop it, he’s fine isn’t he, he’s back, he’s hungover, but that’s something he’s used to”. Max whispered soothingly, rubbing my back.
It took him about 10 minutes to calm me down properly and he left about half an hour afterwards.

I got up from the sofa and walked up the stairs; I rested my head against the bedroom door and sighed before opening it.
“I shouldn’t ha-” I started, but stopped when I saw he was asleep, I sighed and moved forwards, pulling his shoes off, he didn’t move much, but he was definitely just asleep.
I pulled one of his arms from his jacket and moved to take the other off when I noticed the love-bite on his neck. That stung more than I thought anything else could have.
I bit my lip and continued to take his jacket off carefully. Very slowly, I ran my fingers along his chest, lifting up his shirt as I did; his chest was covered in nail marks. I took a deep breath and turned away.
“Nath” he croaked suddenly, making me jump, he obviously hadn’t been asleep.
I turned around and looked at Jay, he pushed himself up on the bed, “Nath, I’m sorry. I promise, I can explain, please” he said, his blue eyes filling with tears.
